The first characteristic of God I chose to study was Promise Keeper. Since my middle name is Promise, I have always loved and cherished the idea of promises and the importance of keeping them. I actually have this saying: “I promise on my middle name” that I often use to express the importance of truth behind what I am saying. I do not like to break my promises, but unfortunately, because I am human, it happens. I go back on my word. I don’t follow through with something. I let someone down. I let myself down. I let God down. And I will continue to do so, because no matter how hard I try, I continue to sin.
Someone who has never let me down, though, is God. He has always followed through. He has always kept His word. He has never let me down, and He will never let me down.
My God is a Promise Keeper. That is a God that I will always have faith in! Knowing that what He says is true and good, is something that I can always trust. I wanted to study specific instances where He has displayed that He is a Promise Keeper.
When you look in the Bible for God being a Promise Keeper, you will find that He has kept thousands of promises throughout the entire book. From the point where He created humanity to the point where He sent His son to die for us and give us salvation, there are promises being kept from the beginning until now.
He promised Abraham that he would have many sons and he fulfilled that promise by giving him a long line of descendants which later included Jesus the Messiah. (Genesis 17)
He promised to free the Israelites and lead them out of slavery and fulfilled that promise by leading them to a land of freedom and harmony literally called “The Promised Land”. (Exodus 6)
He promised that all the prophesies described in the Old Testament foretelling the coming of Jesus would be fulfilled, and they were. (Isaiah 61)
He promised to never leave us and to fulfill that promise He has given us the Holy Spirit upon acceptance to guide us. (John 14)
I could go on and on forever with all the promises God has kept and fulfilled in the Bible. But what does this mean? It means that because God has over and over again proven to keep His promises, I can trust that He will keep the ones that have not yet been fulfilled.
He promises to never flood the earth again. I have faith that He will keep His promise. (Genesis 9)
He promises to include us in His work on earth. I have faith that He will keep His promise. (2 Peter 1)
He promises to one day come back. I have faith that He will keep His promise. (John 14)
Because I trust Him to keep His promises, I have faith that He will never break His promises to me. He will never give up on me or stop fighting for me to come back to Him. He promised that to me, and I KNOW that He will keep that promise. Because He is a Promise Keeper!
